Rock Your Rhetoric: 10 Tools To Make Your Message Stand OutRhetorical tools are your secret weapons to make your message stand out. Here are 10 easy-to-use tools that help you become a more impactful speaker. The best way to get started? Pick one and include it in an email, or presentation of conversation today (my favorite is number 6). Here you go: #1 Alliteration – Play with Sounds "Boldly break barriers and build bridges." #2 Metaphor – Paint a Picture "Our team is the engine driving innovation, propelling us forward into uncharted territories." #3 Anaphora – Repeat for Impact "With every challenge we face, with every setback we encounter, with every triumph we celebrate, we grow stronger together." #4 Parallelism – Keep it Balanced "To succeed in business, you need dedication, resilience, and a relentless pursuit of excellence." #5 Antithesis – Embrace Contrast "In the midst of despair, we found hope. In the face of adversity, we discovered strength." #6 Ethos, Pathos, Logos – The Persuasive Trio "Our product is backed by years of research (logos), endorsed by industry experts (ethos), and designed to make your life better (pathos)." #7 Chiasmus – Flip the Script "Ask not what your country can do for you; ask what you can do for your country." #8 Analogy – Illuminate with Similarity "Just as a gardener tends to their plants, nurturing them with care, a leader cultivates a team, fostering growth and development." #9 Hyperbole – Dial Up the Drama "The project was so successful, it felt like we moved mountains in a day." #10 Oxymoron – Fusion of Opposites "Our business is an agile tanker. Big yet fast." Add these tools to your communication toolbox. But don’t orate. Use one or two at a time so it sounds natural. Simon Alexander Ong is a celebrated author, speaker and award-winning life coach. His 2022 debut book, Energize, became an instant bestseller. In this week’s episode, he shares how you can develop “charisma on tap”, why CEOs are really Chief Energy Officers, how to keep the energy up on video calls, and how to deal with energy vampires. Listen on Spotify and Apple: Effective Communications Tools for Parents (and Leaders)Although "How to Talk So Little Kids Will Listen" by Joanna Faber and Julie King was originally designed for parents, I discovered its profound relevance to the realm of business leadership too. The book has plenty of insights into playful strategies and empowering techniques that bridge effective communication in both parenting and leadership. Many of these - such as offering choices, embracing empathy, and providing clarity - can easily be applied to your communications as a business leader. Consider incorporating creative autonomy into your directives, fostering a workplace where clarity and empathy triumph over mere commands. A great read for both parents and communicators alike! Have an amazing weekend! Best, Oliver
